Knowing your value as a Music Producer
Переглядів 3745 місяців тому
There are lots of videos on UA-cam with so called guru's of beat making. Most of which I couldn't name a single record they produced. This video goes into knowing what your true value is and how to use that to measure where you are in your career. I also use this as a way to explain why I do not sell beats.....

Just a quick video of b roll from my FX30 .... I just love the way the #MPC3000 looks in any light... music is the instrumental to "Hangman's Neckbrace" by Big Nothing on my EP "Dory And Terry Chronicles" that drops on February 16th at www.RobViktum.com and all streaming platforms.

How To Really Chop Samples On The MPC XSE

Ive always loved Akai, but the #mpcx / #mpcxse is such a work horse. There isn't much this machine can't do. Converters etc etc etc... trigger warning... I DONT CARE! Getting caught up in that mind set will block your creativity and have you second guessing every beat you make with your newer gear... the new #akaimpc line is great.... make beats and enjoy!
How Do You Make The Spacey Sound Effects In Your Beats? #akaipro #akaimpc #microkorg #mpc4000

This is a question I get a lot on my IG account. I layer in a lot of spacey sounds and cool little bleeps and bloops through out my beats. This is a technique I learned from Dj Premier, Pete Rock, and Da Beatminerz. I used to mystify and come up with wild ideas on how those sounds were made.... Well, it's not nearly that magical lol.... Here is how I accomplish these extra textures for my beats...
MPC 4000 in 2024? - Honestly Its The Best Of All The Vintage MPC's and in this video I share why

The 4000 was years ahead of its time. On June 5th 2002 the #MPC4000 was released. It was feature packed, but the departure from some of the normal #Akaimpc workflow caused a bit of controversy in the producer community. It was also ridiculously expensive for the time so not a lot of people bought it.... Well it's been 22 years and this machine still holds up. It sounds great, it has a lot of th...

Standalone or not, there are a ton of other options that don't really work that well yet either.... why pay for another? In this video I talk about why I think this is kind of pointless feature until the technology gets better... Serato, RIPX, and FL Studio all do this already and from what I can tell have similar results. Besides getting drums this is kind of gimmick until better results can b...

Hi Rob, I tried FL's stem Seperation, very honestly I wasn't happy with the results. I tried quite a few songs, the best results that I got was from Stem Roller and RipX. One thing I noticed though for different songs and instrumentions some work better than other, happens almost all the times.

If Linn was so great why didn't he just create more great ideas without Akai? The Original 2 MPCs (60, 60II and 3K) are really the culmination of Roger Linn's ideas and Akai's technology not just some grand idea Linn had. Probably the thing that hurt Linn the most was the success of the MPC's because it made people have high expectations of him which required $$$$ that just weren't available to him. Not even sure the Tempest can be considered a win.

Some songs separate easily. Some, not so much. Moises does a good job with most of the songs, but not all. A tough separation is when the guitar and bass are playing the same notes like in a heavy rock riff. A good demo would show a side-by-side audio comparison using a song that doesn't separate well on another platform.

same. i love my 303. it crapped out about 5 years ago (stkll haven't got it fixed) but the distortion, the overdrive, the lpf/overdrive, the pitch, the verb, the phaser, flanger etc!!!! so quality. I had a 32mb card for 16min 44.1/16bit, 32 min 22.025/12 bit. and 10 bit made it 6 times the bit rate and the carbon footprint. awesome machine, when I saw that one issue of Wax Poetics with Doom on the back cover holding the 303? Son, I was in fucking heaven

I don't sell my beats either- I totally agree with you on the reasons and motivations behind it- I don't currently have any big hits or collabs with major artists, but I'm ok with that- If something blows up, believe me, I'd love it and be extremely excited about that- For me, there's something to be said about not letting just anyone have a beat and put something i don't align with over it- I'd absolutely love to be at the point where i can do this full time and not have to worry about money and expenses, i love music- At the same time, I'm not willing to "sell out" or just "give away" my music for pennies and have someone own it... i definitely agree that maintaining control is very important- Love your work man, it would be fun to meet you-

If you have a SCSI card reader on the 3000, you can drag and drop samples/files to the 3000 from a Mac/PC via SCSI to USB cable (very pricey but worth it). I’ve done this on my 3000LE and 2000XL.

@@JUKE179rI think valixi allows the scsi card reader to write in Windows format fat32, so can take the card and drag and drop in a pc. But I have a 3000 and I prefer to sample straight on it from vinyl or decent soundcard and chop on it. I like the saturation in the preamp and the way it operate in sampling.

Im excited.. 20 years ago the closest I could get to stems was to hard pan vinyl from certain labels when sampling and then painstakingly filter/eq.. its amazing how far things have come for beatmakers today to have these tools that open a world of resources that are relatively affordable and at their fingertips. but as with DJs who today utilise controllers/tools that autobeatmatch, it also means we are obliged to not get lazy and raise the bar by investing energy into elevating other aspects of the sound if we have technology doing the graft for us. I agree with the quality concern aspect of your argument as some stem extractions Ive heard sound very tainted, so I do expect a wave of muddy sounding remixes now stemming is set to become commonplace in production gear, despite it being primitive.
